Fertility Counseling and Reproductive Health

The decision of whether or not to start a family is one of the most important we can make. If you are having trouble with moving forward in your decision making regarding family building, I can help you explore and release the emotional bonds that might be interfering in this process so that you are free to decide what is best for you and your situation.

When we do have a desire for children in our lives, difficulty conceiving can trigger some of our deepest insecurities and fears, whether we are male or female. My personal interest in fertility counseling began when I was dealing with fertility issues myself.  I was working with a therapist at the time and I can remember wishing that my therapist had the experience, knowledge and training to help me work through the many complex issues and feelings I was experiencing.

Talking about fertility is not something you “just” know how to handle or are trained to talk about in therapy school. In fact, most people coping with fertility issues experience a real disconnect between their own reality and what other people are telling them they should think or feel. Having experienced that disconnect myself, I knew I wanted to be able to assist women, men and couples in a different way. As part of my post-doctoral training, I did a six-month rotation with a psychologist at Duke who specializes in reproductive health and I continue with ongoing training.

The process of coming to terms with and working through the issues around fertility is different for everyone, but feelings of loss, grief, self-doubt, shame and loss of control are very common. Many people often feel totally out of sync with their peers as well. While we are struggling to conceive, friends and colleagues are getting pregnant, and it seems everywhere we look there’s a pregnant woman or a family being made.  It’s frustrating and demoralizing to have so little control over something you want so desperately.

My work as a fertility counselor is to hold a safe and supportive place for all of the issues and feelings related to family building to unfold and be processed. I would be honored to walk with you through this process as you grieve your losses (potentially related to abortion, miscarriages, stillbirths, failed adoptions, and/or infertility treatments) and help free you up to move forward and create create the life you want to life you want to lead, however that may be.
